Suggestions Anyone?

I am searching for the perfect read - not the perfect book (if one of those even exists) but just the perfect read for me right now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

As I have written earlier, I have struggled a little since finishing American Wife which I thought was brilliant - it's been a while since a book made me stay up way past my bedtime to finish it like that.

I'm looking for a book with strong characterisation - don't really care about plot all that much - and it has to be a real page turner with some depth to it - something to draw me in and keep me there.

Ideas anyone??

I loved Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Joathon Safran Foer so much that at the end I carried it in the car to read at traffic lights because I could not put it down.

The most recent book I read and loved was The Last Anniversery by Liane Moriarty.

But I don't know you well enough to know if this would be your cup of tea!

It can be hard to follow up a really good book. I'd suggest When will there be good news? by Kate Atkinson. It's a page turner with some very memorable characters, and it's not short of plot either!

I'll just mention four authors who I've had a lot of success with lately in terms of keeping me enthusiastic.
Angela Huth
Alberto Moravia
Salley Vicker
Graham Greene

Hi Suzie - thanks so much for that suggestion - I have seen that book around a few times but I will have to pick it up now.
Hi Dina - thanks a lot for your idea, again, I have seen this book before and have been tempted to I will give it a try.
Hi Sarah, I have just picked up Case Histories by Kate Atkinson from the library - is this one as good as When will there be good news?
Hi Tony - many thanks for the author suggestions.

I really liked:
The History of Love by Nicole Krauss

Ohhhh,
The Glass Castle by Julia Glass

I am not sure what you were looking for, but I LOVED those. They are light reads...

oh, you have to try:
The Wednesday Sisters by Meg Waite Clayton.

Have you read it??

It contains the most amazing characterization EVER.

Hi Bethany - thanks so much for your suggestions - I haven't read any of them so I will definitely add them to my list. I have heard a lot about The Wednesday Sisters but haven't been able to track it down in Australia which means I'll need to look at Amazon and with the state of the Australian dollar at the moment I might have to wait a little while for that one!

I'm glad to hear American Wife worked so well for you. I'm even gladder that I rechecked it from the library yesterday!! :)

As for a book with strong characterization, if you haven't read On Chesil Beach yet, I would definitely recommend that one. It's very much a character study, and it's short, so it could be a good slump buster.
